Buzzzzzzz!

Buzz.jpgI'm pretty sure Buzz! is going to be a dark horse in family entertainment... especially with the newly announced feature of custom quizzes. I first heard about this at the GDC at the beginning of the year, but had to keep my lips sealed, but Joystiq just found Sony's new site... so I'm guessing everything is official.

Here is the rundown... Anyone (with a PSN account) can write their own quiz from any computer, upload it to the network, and have it playable by anyone. I think this is a game changer for this type of game. In the past, these had limited shelf life because you would eventually memorize questions. But this keeps it fresh and flexible. Criterion has been keeping Burnout Paradise interesting with free updates to their game, but massive user generated content will take this idea to the next level. The combination of Buzz! and Little Big Planet are starting to build a very interesting story for Sony... it will be fun to see where they take things over the next few months.

I'd love to see this evolve into a wiki like environment where people can fact-check, update, and build onto other people's quizzes. It would also be really cool to incorporate pictures or videos into questions.

Home

homeps3.jpgAs I've said in the past, I'm really excited about Home's potential. If it becomes a natural extension of the PS3 interface, I'm pretty sure it will be game changing. The thing is... it has to be forced on people. If it is just another program, I'm not sure people will use it, but if you show up in your own little universe each time you load up, it will change the way we game.

According to Joystiq, Home is in the final stages of beta, version 0.98. I've read that testing has expanded from Europe to Asia, and will hopefully be heading stateside soon. We've got a meeting with SCEA next month, so hopefully I'll be able to get inside and play around. The last time we met, we just didn't have enough time.

My PS3 knows I'm fat.

fatface.jpgSo I downloaded a demo of Facebreaker, a new boxing game, that has a really cool feature. You can use the PS3 eye camera to upload pictures of yourself. Naturally I tried it... and while I was a bit disgusted by my fat face, I wasn't expecting to be made fun of by the game. After 'determining my personality' from my picture, the game started offering step by step instructions for how to bake brownies!

If you look closely at the bottom of this picture, it says I should be preheating my oven to 350. As much as I want to turn off the game, I'm looking back at my pile of McDonalds and beer cans. The PS3 is right. I need to go on a diet.

These damn video games are smarter than I thought. I think I'll have another Diet Pepsi.

I'll update this with my final character... it isn't going to be pretty.

Better with age.

bottle.jpgThe Slate has a new article out about the Sonos music networking system. It talks about how the "Sonos you buy today will get better as it ages." It goes  on to talk about the software updates that have happened over the years to constantly update the hardware and give it new functionality. While it is an interesting read, I find it incomplete. Everyone has firmware updates now.

Look at the iPhone. Apple re-revolutionized the iPhone with the 2.0 software update and the Apps store. They are now selling $1 million in software per day. The XBox360 and PS3 are the same way, where every so often you get all kinds of new functionality that you may have never expected. I bought my PSP as a gaming device, and now I can watch movies from my laptop, through my PS3 to my PSP anywhere in the world (not that I've actually done that... but I could, and thats what counts).

It makes it easier to pay the early adopter tax when you know it will pay off in the end.

LittleBigPlanet might be huge

lbp.jpgI've been hearing about LBP for a while now, but I'm starting to think it is going to be a big deal. The game isn't out until the holidays, but Deutsch is already starting the campaign to make Sackboy an icon for Sony.

AdAge just posted an article that hints at a viral campaign that plays up the positive aspects of the Aqua Team Hunger Force fiasco. They are planning to unload about 1,000 ready-to-steal signs:

"Sony also plans to create about 1,000 "LittleBig billboards" -- about the size of a small yard sign -- to stick in the ground in and around San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Unlike typical cardboard yard signs, however, the minibillboards will feature working lights and ladders and other high-end art and design. The idea came from the game's agency, Deutsch. While the size of the boards almost ensures that at least a few will be stolen, that's OK with Sony. A spokeswoman said some pilfered signs posted on eBay may even add to the hype."

YouTube also has some hints of in-game brand integration. Amazon.com already has a trailer posted that ends with Sackboy pulling an Amazon package from the mailbox. With the ability to create your own levels being the unique selling point of this game... it will be interesting to see how many companies get onboard and create their own levels... and when this happens, will this make for a better or worse gaming experience?

[UPDATE] Looks like Walmart has a similar version out that I didn't know about. You can see it here.
